Wilmington Choral Society marks 75 years with anniversary concert

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Choral Society, the city’s oldest community choir, is celebrating 75 years of music with a special concert at The Wilson Center. The milestone performance will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. and will feature more than 90 singers.

“This anniversary is a culmination of all the hard work over the last 75 years that we have put into this choir and building it and sustaining it,” said Terah Hoobler of the Wilmington Choral Society. “We have managed to keep our group tight-knit and together, so we’re really excited to celebrate this special anniversary.”

The concert will feature a mix of sacred and secular works spanning the choir’s history. Selections include Irving Berlin’s Christmas, Baby It’s Cold Outside, the Hallelujah Chorus, Ose Shalom, and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, among others. Hoobler said there will also be a few surprises for the audience.

“The first song the choir ever sung was the Hallelujah Chorus, so you can definitely expect to hear that,” she said.

The Wilmington Choral Society rehearses weekly and performs twice a year. The group welcomes new members of all musical levels, offering opportunities for singers from diverse backgrounds to join the ensemble.

“This current concert is 90 members,” Hoobler said. “It’s fun hearing everybody’s voices blend together for that final concert.”

Tickets for the anniversary concert are available through The Wilson Center’s website or the Wilmington Choral Society’s site.
