Wilmington City Council member Kevin Spears charged with criminal contempt

COLUMBUS COUNTY (WWAY) — Wilmington City Council member Kevin Spears has been arrested in Columbus County.

He was charged with criminal contempt Monday afternoon during a child support hearing.

According to court documents, while on the witness stand, Spears refused to answer basic questions, which delayed the proceedings. He also asked questions to opposing counsel which ‘showed a lack of respect to the proceedings’, and during his testimony, he allegedly voiced ‘continued irrelevant banter’ which he was warned was improper.

He was ordered held for 24 hours.

Spears will be released around noon.
