Wilmington Community Justice Center announced at The Harrelson Center

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David may be stepping down from his role later this year, but he’s leaving something behind.

The Wilmington Community Justice Center at The Harrelson Center has a goal of achieving justice for victims of crimes through support services.

“A 24/7 center located immediately across the street from the court house that will serve mostly women and children involved in intimate partner violence cases, as well as violence amongst youth,” David said.

The center was funded through the New Hanover Community Endowment in partnership with the district attorneys office and The Harrelson Center.

The center is at the former site of the New Hanover County Jail. Ben David said he expects this addition to be an asset to the county for years to come.

“We know that to whom much is given, much is expected, and we expect this center to be self-sustaining at the end of the grant cycle. To be here for years to come to serve the entire region, as we do justice and fight for people who are in some of the most traumatic environments in our region,” said David.

Law enforcement will also have a role in the center including the Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

WPD will have some of its Domestic Violence and Special Victims Unit Detectives available to help.

“Very important. I think the chief along with the district attorney recognize the importance of collaborating with community groups and providing resources, so we can better serve our citizens and victims,” said Captain Rodney Dawson with the Wilmington Police Department.
