Wilmington Fire Department welcomes four-legged friends to the fire family

WILMINGTON. NC (WWAY) — On Monday, Wilmington Fire Department welcomed two new crisis response dogs to the fire family.

Their names are Jethro and Clyde. This brings the total to now five dogs in the program that is in collaboration with paws4people.

These dogs work alongside WFD to help ease tension, lower anxiety, and reduce stress. They provide comfort at the station and out on calls.

Lt. Josh Baltz said he looks forward to getting to know his new teammate and cuddly companion.

“It’s really about the job that we get to do and helping our brothers and sisters overcome some of the stresses,” Lt. Baltz said. “So, every day we get to come to work. But we get to make an even bigger.”

He said he has seen firsthand how a crisis response dog can deescalate a difficult situation, especially when children are involved.
