Wilmington Fire, Police to face off in annual ‘Battle of the Badges’ blood drive

WILMINGTON, NC — The Wilmington Fire Department and Wilmington Police Department are set to face off in this year’s Battle of the Badges blood drive, a friendly rivalry aimed at boosting lifesaving donations.

The event takes place Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Red Cross Donation Center on 16th Street in Wilmington.

Residents can support either department by making an appointment here using the code ILM BADGES or by walking in. Donors will be asked which department they are representing, with each donation earning a “tick mark” for that team.

Firefighters have taken the trophy for the past two years, but both departments say the ultimate goal is replenishing the local blood supply.

“We all know in the end it’s for the folks that need the blood,” said Wilmington Police Lt. Greg Willett. “Blood is life-giving, and both fire and police see firsthand how important it can be.”

Wilmington Fire Department spokesperson Rebekah Thurston said the competition offers another way for first responders to serve the community.

“The Red Cross really needs blood all the time, but definitely in the summer,” Thurston said. “We just want to find one more way to give back.”

The American Red Cross reports that blood donations often drop during summer months, making drives like this critical for keeping supplies stocked.
