NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man has been found guilty in a 2021 hit-and-run crash that killed 29-year-old Ammad Brown on Carolina Beach Road.

Court records show Adam Kendall Marshall, 26, was convicted by a jury Thursday of felony hit and run resulting in serious injury or death and felony death by vehicle.

Judge George F. Jones sentenced Marshall to serve between 21 and 74 months in prison.

Following Marshall’s arrest and initial court appearance, Ben David, who was district attorney at the time, said Marshall was driving his girlfriend’s car when he hit Brown. Instead of stopping, David said Marshall, then a senior at UNCW, drove to Richmond County and told a mechanic to fix the car within 24 hours.

According to David, Marshall drove around for nine days after Brown’s death before turning himself in. He initially told investigators he thought he had hit a deer.

Lindsey Yelton was also charged with accessory after the fact and aiding and abetting impaired driving. Those charges were dismissed in June. Investigators said after reviewing digital evidence on Yelton’s phone, they came to believe she genuinely thought Marshall’s claim about hitting a deer was true.
