Wilmington man sentenced to prison for drug offenses

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man has been sentenced to prison for drug offenses.

Jarrod Spencer, 41, pled guilty to one count of Trafficking in Substitute Cathinones, one count of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver a Schedule I Controlled Substance, and one count of Driving While Impaired.

Judge Frank Jones of New Hanover County sentenced Spencer to a total minimum of more than 5 years (70 months) and a maximum of 93 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.

Judge Jones also imposed the statutorily mandated drug trafficking fine of $50,000.

On March 14, 2021 at around 8:30 AM, officers from the Wilmington Police Department responded to the Shipyard Village Apartments on Galley Lane in Wilmington in reference to a reported hit and run. A 911 caller said a vehicle traveled through the office building of the apartment and that the driver subsequently ran towards Carolina Beach Road.

Offices quickly found Spencer in the bushes, and after a brief struggle he was arrested.

A search uncovered $904 and a plastic bag containing 28.2 grams of eutylone, which is a substitute cathinone commonly referred to as bath salts. A later search of the of the defendant’s vehicle yielded 6.7 grams of marijuana.

Blood results determined Spencer was impaired by phencyclidine (commonly referred to as angel dust) at the time of the offense.
