Wilmington MLK Community Center holds groundbreaking for expansion and renovation project
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Construction is officially underway on the new MLK Community Center after a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday morning.
This kicks off the MLK Center’s multi-million-dollar expansion and renovation project.
Once the work is done, the MLK Center will have a new gym with a school regulation-sized basketball court, new goals, and scoreboards. It will also have designated spaces for volleyball, pickle-ball, and wrestling.
Wilmington City Councilman, Kevin Spears, said he grew up playing basketball at the center.
He said he looks forward to its improvements.
“We’ll be standing inside and shooting shots and, ya know, after that people will be cooking in the commercial kitchen and things of that nature,” Spears said. “So, it’s an amazing day in the City of Wilmington for the residents of this community and also for the organization that is the City of Wilmington.”
The project is anticipated to be completed in spring 2025.
