Wilmington Police Department announces name of newest K9 live on WWAY

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department’s newest K9 finally has a name.

Members of the Department, along with a one-year-old Belgian Malinois German Shepherd mix, made the announcement live during Tuesday’s Good Evening Wilmington broadcast.

After more than 2,700 name suggestions from the public, Zeus was chosen as the name for the special K9.

WPD says the winning name was submitted more than 20 times.

Zeus will be replacing one of the department’s five canine officers who is now medically retired.

Official training will take about four months before Zeus can go to work.
