WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As Memorial Day weekend brings thousands of additional visitors to the Port City, the Wilmington Police Department says officers are prepared to handle the increased crowds with the help of new technology, specialized patrols, and expanded training.

Police officials say the department is utilizing a variety of tools throughout the holiday weekend, including drones, marine patrol units, e-bike officers, and virtual reality training systems designed to improve officer response and public safety.

“The tools that we have are going to be extremely instrumental ensuring that the services that we provide with state-of-the-art training, state-of-the-art equipment,” said Sgt. Ronald Evans.

Evans said the department continues adapting to changes in law enforcement by investing in both technology and hands-on training.

“It’s going to be one of those things that will allow us to do our job even at a higher level,” said Evans.

Among the technologies being used are tethered drones, which provide officers with an aerial view during active emergencies, along with smaller drones equipped with 4K cameras that can assist with clearing buildings and responding to barricaded subjects.

“We’re just able to give them just an extra tool in the toolbox is what we are,” said Kim Breeden with the Wilmington Police Department.

The department’s marine unit is also increasing patrols along the Cape Fear River using high-speed tactical boat operations during the busy holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, e-bike patrol officers will be stationed throughout downtown Wilmington to help navigate crowded streets, engage with the public, and respond more quickly to calls for service.

The department is also implementing a new virtual reality training system that allows officers to work through real-world scenarios, strengthen critical thinking skills, and practice Taser target simulations.

“This is going to be an investment in the future for positive police-community relations, and if it prevents even one negative outcome in the future, it was wholly worth it,” said Captain Matt Fox.

Evans said the department remains focused on making sure officers are prepared for evolving challenges and changing situations.

“When these new innovations, and these new tools, and these new equipment, and even how we operate, come to the forefront, we ensure that we have a hands-on approach with the training of our officers and our professional staff, as well to make sure we are on top of our game,” said Evans.

Police are also reminding residents and visitors to stay safe throughout the holiday weekend as officers continue patrols across the city.
