Woman pleads guilty to hit and run that killed a UNCW student

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A woman was sentenced in Wilmington Friday after killing a UNCW student while drunk driving in 2023

Court documents show Hailey Sigg—who 22 at the time—was driving 84 MPH when she hit and killed 21-year-old McGroary “Rory” Domitrovits in the 700 block of Eastwood Road.

Investigators found a bottle of tequila and a THC vape in the car with her blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit.

Sigg was charged with felony hit and run, driving while impaired, felony possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance, and possession of an open container in the passenger area of a vehicle.

On Friday, Sigg pled guilty to all charges. She will spend between 58 and 82 months in prison.

During the proceedings, Sigg admitted full responsibility for her actions.

“There won’t be a day that will go by where I won’t think of Rory and your family. I will always be praying for you, for your healing, and your forgiveness,” Sigg said to the family.

Several family members of Domitrovits also spoke to the court.

“We have all been impacted in big and small ways. We all mourn for who he was, and what he meant to each of us. I also mourn for who he was meant to become. There was so much more he was supposed to do and so many roles he was supposed to fill,” Nancy Lewis, the mother of Domitrovits said.

Domitrovits’ grandfather also spoke.

“Grief is not something—it’s not a country—that we ever return from. It is now with us every single day,” Steve Lewis said.

District Attorney Jason Smith said the case serves as a reminder.

“Choices and actions have consequences,” Smith said. “If you decide to drink alcohol, or use drugs, and get into a vehicle and you hurt somebody, whether you kill them or not, then we’re going to prosecute it to the fullest extent “

Sigg’s blood alcohol content on that night was originally reported to be a 0.15, but during the proceedings, the defense admitted that her highest recorded blood alcohol content was a 0.21.
