WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is warning residents about a recent scam.

According to the police department, there’s a new scam where callers claim you “missed a federal grand jury summons” and saying they owe fines.

The scammers pressure the victims into withdrawing money at a Bitcoin machine or scan a barcode to transfer money.

WPD reminds the community, that law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone, ask for cryptocurrency, or instruct people to scan a barcode for payment.

If you receive a call like the one described, hang up immediately, do not send any money, and report the scam to WPD’s non-emergency line.
