WWAY Student Athlete of the Week: Avery Fitzgerald

Hoggard junior leads team rebounds and hopes to become a pediatric doctor

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – The WWAY Student Athlete of the Week is Avery Fitzgerald from Hoggard High School.

The junior stars on the girls’ basketball team that is fresh off a state championship appearance last year and another conference championship this year, leading the Vikings in rebounds.

Fitzgerald is one of the few in the running to be the Azalea Princess as well. She says she wanted to ‘grow herself’ by putting herself out of her comfort zone and increase her confidence.

She boasts a 4.62 GPA while maintaining involvement in many extracurricular activities like FCA, Beta Club, National Honors Society, the Unified Club and has even started “Hoggard Helping Seniors”, volunteering at the senior center next to the campus multiple times a week.

In college she hopes to pursue the pre-med route and become a pediatric doctor, citing a love of working with kids that is both ‘hard and fun’.

Fitzgerald says all of her many impressive feats are all attainable through her faith and says Bible study plays a big role in her work-life balance.
