WWAY Student Athlete of the Week: Logan Ponnett
Hoggard baseball standout also serves as school's Unified Champion Club President
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Hoggard senior Logan Ponnett is the WWAY Student Athlete of the Week.
Ponnett boasts a 4.4 GPA while also serving as the President of the school’s award-winning Unified Champion Club, which promotes inclusivity of students of all abilities.
“It’s a huge thing for me,” says Ponnett, “I’ve lived with a brother (Mason Ponnett) with special needs for 18 years now so I’ve always been in and out of special ed classrooms… when I got to high school I really got involved with kids with special needs.”
“This was a buildup to the last 18 years and wanting (Mason) to make friends that weren’t just my friends. Being President, I wanted to see what we could do for all the kids, not just Mason.”
He says his favorite subjects are science courses and hopes to pursue a phycology degree, following his father’s footsteps, and potentially tying in a career with his work with special needs people and sports.
The shortstop has aspirations of playing baseball in college. He is hitting above a .370 average through 15 games. The team is 13-2 so far. He feels he started off slow, but the team is ‘rolling’ exiting spring break.
