WWAY Student Athlete of the Week: Tristan Shivers
Shivers may lead NC in assists per game, but her biggest assist may come as a coach
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Tristan Shivers is the WWAY Student Athlete of the Week. She boasts a 4.1 GPA, volunteers her time to better her community, and leads the top Mideastern girl’s basketball team in points and assists. She is a coach at Halo Hoops, trying to mentor younger kids about the game of basketball and the game of life.
“I love seeing the kids get better,” said Shivers. “It makes me feel good because that was me. It’s a good way to spend my time outside of – all this.”
Shivers currently is in the #1 spot in North Carolina high school girl’s basketball for assists, according to Maxpreps.
“I’m much more than a scorer. But there’s more to the game. You have to bring more – lead your team, assist your team – it’s bigger than just you.”
She mentions she specifically likes helping younger girls learn about work-life balance between school and basketball, if you want to excel like she is.
“I just think that they don’t realize how much effort you have to put it. It’s a lot bigger than basketball. There’s a lot of hard work you have to do to continue to be a student-athlete adn earn that privilege. I like telling them about it, they seem so into it and I just love that.”
In the classroom, her favorite classes are English and AP World History. She says her interest is still very broad of what her options will be to study at the next level, but she is very interested in the human body. Shivers recovered from an ACL surgery and wants to help prevent the next injury.
“There’s a lot more work you have to put outside of your rehab if you want to get back to the athlete you were,” said Shivers. “My meniscus – it hurts still, but that’s what drives me – knowing I can help them and make sure they don’t end up like me.”
