WWAY Student Athlete of the Week: Zoe Finelli

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – Ashley High School’s Zoe Finelli is the WWAY Student Athlete of the Week.

The junior defender starts on the soccer team that has been ranked #1 in the country. She also maintains a 4.556 GPA, good for #1 in her graduating class. Her team has state title aspirations, after coming up just short on that stage last season.

As promising as her on-the-field career is, she recognizes the importance of academics to carry her to promising off-the-field career.

“I have always worked as hard as I can in everything I do and that applies to school and to sports. I feel like to be the best person I can be, I have to do well in both things. In the future, I could get injured and never play soccer again and I need things to fall back on.”

While she’s not studying or practicing, the All-MEC Honorable Mention player likes to volunteer, specifically feeding the homeless in Wilmington. She is also in the National Honor’s Society, Beta Club and Math Club – her favorite subject.

Finelli hopes to apply that love of mathematics to a career like engineering, chemistry, or something in the medical field.
