RALEIGH, NC (UNCW) — Freshman midfielder Annah Lindberg’s second goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining lifted N.C. State over visiting UNCW, 2-1, in the women’s soccer season opener for both teams Friday night at Dail Soccer Field.
The Seahawks seek to square their record Sunday with their home debut against Georgia Southern in a 1 p.m. kick-off at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack entertains No. 11 Portland Sunday at Noon.
In Friday’s close opener, UNCW grabbed a 1-0 advantage just after intermission before Lindberg evened the score in the 66th minute and then broke through for the game-winning goal at 87:38.
“It was a back and forth game, but I thought that we stepped up and gave ourselves a chance,” said Paul Cairney, UNCW’s 19-year head coach. “Both teams had some decent chances. Give N.C. State credit. They worked their way back into the game, had the upper hand at the end and scored.
“If you look at the box score, we played some different personnel and definitely went to our bench because of injuries. To come up here and play this hard against an ACC team with a depleted squad is a credit to our players.”
After a scoreless first half, UNCW junior striker Katrina Guillou, a preseason All-CAA selection, snapped the stalemate at 54:11 following an assist from Lindsey Byrne.
Lindberg then took a pass from Alexa Allen at 65:52 to even the score at 1-all before breaking the tie with the clincher in the final minutes.
GAME NOTES: N.C. State improved to 5-0 lifetime vs. UNCW…The Seahawks scored for the first time this year after a pair of 1-0 losses in exhibitions…The Wolfpack also won last year’s meeting, 2-1, in Raleigh. Guillou led the Seahawks with 10 goals last season…It was the 320th win in N.C. State history…Guillou was one of four players to play all 90 minutes for UNCW…Sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy recorded three saves in goal for UNCW.
