WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) –– Sophomore Nicole Lott totaled 24 kills in two matches to lead UNCW to a sweep of Coastal Carolina and Fairfield on Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn Wilmington Mayfaire Classic at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks (2-0) opened their season with a 3-1 win over rival Coastal Carolina (0-1) before sweeping Fairfield (0-2), 3-0, who played in the NCAA tournament last fall after winning the MAAC Championship.

In the opener, Lott and junior Meredith Peacock recorded 14 kills apiece as UNCW rallied from a 1-all tie after two sets with a pair of convincing wins (25-16, 25-14) in the third and fourth sets. Sophomore setter Alyssa Desjardins doled out 22 assists and completed a double-double with 10 digs.

In the fourth and final set against the Chanticleers, the Seahawks recorded four of their 10 blocks and held Coastal to a -.030 hitting average.

In the night cap, the Seahawks again turned up the defense, out-hitting Fairfield, .289-.044. Lott held match-high honors with 10 kills while Morgan Kine added seven kills and eight digs. Junior libero Lindsay Hartmann collected a match-high nine digs in the sweep.

The Seahawks tackle NC State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., when they next retake the court.

BUIES CREEK, NC (UNCW) -– Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association selection Katrina Guillou scored early in the second half and the timely strike stood up as the UNCW women’s soccer team shut out state rival Campbell, 1-0, Friday night at the Eakes Sports Complex.

The Seahawks picked up their first win of the season following season-opening losses to N.C. State and Georgia Southern and carry their 1-2 record into Sunday’s 2 p.m. contest against UNC Charlotte at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

“It’s always good to come away with a win on the road against a good team,” said 19-year Head Coach Paul Cairney. The Camels opened their season last week with an impressive 3-2 triumph at home against Richmond.

“It was a hard fought game. Campbell was very well organized and created some good chances. We had control of the ball for long spells, but they would counter attack. We pressed they up high and put them under pressure.”

The two teams battled to a stalemate until Guillou, a junior from Ft. Washington, Md., scored her second goal of the season at 58:17 inside the box. Sophomore defender Madison Melnick was credited with an assist.

“Katrina had a nice finish on the breakthrough goal,” Cairney said. “After that, it was a slugfest for the final 35 minutes. We both had some good chances.”

The Seahawks outshot the Camels, 11-6, including five attempts by junior forward Maddie McCormick.

Goalkeepers Carolyn Huddy and Lisa Rahkola shared the shutout for the Seahawks, combining for two saves on the night.

The Seahawks, who improved to 8-3 lifetime vs. Campbell, play the second of three consecutive state opponents early Sunday went the 49ers visit the Port City.

HIGH POINT, NC (UNCW) -– Jamie Dell and Kalvin Kromer each scored goals as UNCW opened the 2014 season with 2-0 blanking of High Point in the season opener for both teams on Friday at Vert Stadium on Friday.

“A great result to start the season on the road, under tough circumstances, against a tough High Point team’” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “This is a difficult place to play but overall I thought we were deserving of the win. We continue to improve and I loved the way we were committed to hold on to the lead, with our players determined to not let High Point into the game. Jamie Dell scored a goal of the highest quality and Kalvin Kromer was clinical off Matt Tysinger’s rebound. Jacob (VanCompernolle) did an outstanding job of leading the line at the back, but it was a true team performance from our players.”

Dell, a junior, gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when rifled off a shot from the top of the penalty area on the right flank. His shot sailed through the penalty area and caromed off the left post for the eventual winning goal.

In the second half, Kromer a freshman, was in the right place at the right time when he converted a rebound off the cross bar for a 2-0 lead in the 80th minute. Junior Matt Tysiner’s shot bounced off the crossbar to Kromer, who netted his first career goal in his first career game in college.

Sophomore Sean Melvin earned the clean sheet with a pair of saves.

Both finished with 10 shots apiece.

The Seahawks open their home schedule on Sept. 1 with a 7 p.m. start against longtime rival UNCG.

Cape Fear 3 Louisburg College 0

Cape Fear Community College picked up its second win in as many nights and move to 1-0 in conference play as the Sea Devils cruised to a 3-0 sweep at Louisburg College on Friday night.
“Just a great first conference win,” said CFCC Coach Emily Coleman. “It was a tough atmosphere because they had great fans, but we came in and did our job and controlled the tempo of the game.”

Kaley Evans played a strong defensive game for Cape Fear with 25 digs, while Kate Meagher and Riley Litton chipped in with four kills apiece. Brittani Jefferson was a force at net with five blocks.

The Sea Devils (3-0) return to the floor Sunday for matches against Guilford Tech and Brunswick CC in Bolivia.
