WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We had quite an evening of high school football on WWAY’s 5th Quarter. We showcased New Hanover’s victory over Laney along with a handful of other area games. Week 9 of the high school football season is now complete. In fact it was homecoming night at several area schools. Only three weeks remain in the 2014 regular season.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Although practice has already kicked off officially for both units, the UNCW men’s and women’s basketball teams christened the 2014-15 season in style with the annual “Midnite Madness” celebration Friday night at Trask Coliseum.

Unlike the old days, when festivities started with the stroke of midnight, Friday’s affair got under way at 9:30 p.m. following the Trask Trek and more than 1,200 teal-clad fans were treated to performances by the UNCW Cheerleaders and UNCW Dance Team, as well as a variety of games, shooting contests and innovative dunks.

In the student-oriented games, senior Parker Grissom of Charlotte won the Knockout Contest, Kyle Chenevert took the Campus Dining Game and Kendall Hornbuckle won the Dress-Up competition.

Following an elaborate introduction, which featured colored lights and smoke, the men’s and women’s basketball teams then got into the act. Senior point guard Kelva Atkins of the women’s team won the 3-point shooting competition after beating out men’s winner Craig Ponder.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Northeastern scored late in the first half and then used its league-leading defense to hold off UNCW, 1-0, in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer action Friday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Huskies hiked their record to 10-4-2 overall and 5-1-0 in the CAA with the road victory. The Seahawks fell to 7-8-1 and 2-5-0. UNCW is 4-3-1 at home this season.

NU entered the game leading the nation with 11 shutouts and held the Seahawks without a shot in the first half and five overall in the match. UNCW’s defense was up to the task as well, holding NU to nine shots, but freshman forward Kayla Cappuzzo’s score proved to be the difference.

Hannah Lopiccolo ripped a cross in the box at 30:20 and UNCW sophomore goalkeeper Liisa Rahkola managed to knock the ball down, only to have Cappuzzo follow through with the game-winner into the left corner.

UNCW had its best chance of the night with under two minutes left to play when junior forward McCormick turned inside the box and launched a shot that Burnett smothered to preserve the win.

NU senior goalkeeper Paige Burnette ranked first in the nation in goals against average and lowered it again with a stellar performance Friday night.

The Seahawks play their regular season home finale on Sunday at Noon when Hofstra visits. The Huskies travel to the College of Charleston for a 1 p.m. clash with the Cougars.

GAME NOTES: NU grabbed the lead in the 11-game series with UNCW, 6-5, since the series began in 2005…The Huskies have only allowed four goals in 16 matches this season…Only four players had shots for the Seahawks…Maddie McCormick led UNCW with two shots…Lopiccolo, Cappuzzo and Carly Wilhelm had two shots apiece for the Huskies…UNCW was called offsides four times in the match.

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (UNCW) -– Junior Dakota Foskey and senior Casey Buddenbaum were the top finishers for UNCW as the Seahawks finished second in the women’s race and third in the men’s competition late Friday at the College of Charleston Cross Country Invitational.

The Seahawks, competing for the fourth time this fall, used the race at Trophy Lakes in Johns Island as a tune-up for the Colonial Athletic Association championships approaching on Nov. 1 in Boston.

“It was a solid performance, but it was disappointing to lose to the College of Charleston on both sides,” said UNCW distance coach Layne Schwier. “Our men and women got a little behind. We were running well and trying to catch up, but couldn’t.

“It’s a similar situation as last year going into the CAA race. We know what we need to do. We are still bouncing back from three really hard weeks of training and I could tell this week that there was a lot of lingering fatigue.”

Charleston won the 5K women’s race with 37 points, followed by UNCW (70), USC Upstate (123), The Citadel (124) and Campbell (130) in the top-five.

Foskey, from Four Oaks, N.C., finished ninth out of 83 runners with a time of 18:47 to lead UNCW on the flat course.

On the men’s side, USC Upstate took first place with 40 points, ahead of the next four teams of Charleston (56), UNCW (77), Winthrop (85) and The Citadel (102).

Buddenbaum led the Seahawks for the first time this season, covering the 8K layup in 26:28, good enough for 11th place out of 72 entries.

CARY, NC (UNCW) — Freshman Andres Torres and Javier Restrepo advanced to the Round of 16 in the main doubles draw to highlight UNCW’s play in the ITA Men’s Tennis Regionals Friday at Cary Tennis Park.

Torres and Restrepo edged UNC Charlotte’s Paul Cisti and Massalle Ferrer, 8-7 (2), early in the day and will face Duke’s Cale Hammond and Jason Tahir on Saturday.

In other action, Torres defeated Duke’s DJ McCall, 6-2, 7-6 (5), in the second round of singles before falling to Clemson’s Alejandro Augusto, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

Action continues tomorrow in the event at Cary Tennis Park.
