WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Rivals UNCW and East Carolina battled to a scoreless draw Friday night in women’s soccer, with each team enjoying several chances in the renewal of the 21-game series between two old Colonial Athletic Association foes at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks, who open CAA play next weekend, now stand 5-3-1 on the season and played their second overtime game of the season before 463 fans.
The Pirates, playing their final non-conference road game, own a 5-2-1 record and have held opponents scoreless in six matches this fall.
ECU carved out a narrow advantage in shots, 14-13, but sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy of UNCW was up to the task, making nine stops for her fourth shutout of the campaign, including six in the second period.
It marked the fifth overtime game in the series and the first time since the Seahawks and Pirates went scoreless in the 1996 CAA Tournament before UNCW prevailed on penalty kicks.
The Seahawks begin their CAA slate next weekend with a trip to the upper mid-Atlantic region to face Delaware and Drexel. UNCW meets UD on Friday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. before traveling over to Philadelphia for a Sunday, Sept. 28, matchup against the Dragons at 1 p.m.
The Pirates, meanwhile, return home to entertain state foe Campbell on Sunday at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Moa Jarl and Maddie McCormick had four shots apiece to lead the Seahawks…ECU had 10 corner kicks in the contest…Redshirt junior goalkeeper Saundra Baron had one save for the Pirates…Katrina Guillen, UNCW’s leading scorer, launched just one shot on the night…UNCW had three shots in the second overtime stanza…Seventeen games in the 21-game series have been decided by one goal or less.
