COLUMBUS, OHIO (UNCW) — Colin Bonner’s second goal of the game, coming in the 104th minute, lifted UNCW past host Ohio State, 2-1, in men’s college soccer action on Friday at the Wolstein Soccer Complex. It was the season opener for both programs.

On the game winning goal, Jamie Dell, a junior midfielder, beat his defender to the end line and sent a low cross to the near post where Bonner got a heel on it and redireted it in for the winner.

“Tonight was a fantastic effort by our team,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “Ohio State is a difficult opponent and we came to play. We showed strong character after they (OSU) tied the game with a penalty kick. We never dropped our heads.”

Bonner, a sophomore forward, got the Seahawks in the board in the 56th minute when he converted a strong cross from junior Jacob VanCompernolle with a powerful header.

The Buckeyes drew even, however, in the 64th minute when Sage Gardner knocked home a penalty kick.

Sean Melvin made five saves for UNCW while his opposite number, Alex Ivanov, made seven while the Seahawks held a 20-16 advantage in shots.
Senior Mateo Cardona had an opportunity to give UNCW a lead with 1:38 remaining, but OSU keeper made a big save on a penalty kick to send the game into overtime.

“We’re looking forward to getting back on the field on Sunday against Cincinnati.”

Next up: UNCW plays Cincinnati, a 3-0 loser to Northern Illinois on Friday, on Sunday at noon.

Notes: Sean Melvin made his first collegiate start in goal for UNCW … Bonner raised his career total of goals to eight … For Cardona, his missed penalty was the first in two career attempts … Ohio State played the final 17 minutes down a man following a red card in the 89th minute … Kellen Foster joined Melvin as freshmen making the collegiate debuts in the starting 11 … UNCW improved to 3-1-1 in its last five season openers.

ANNAPOLIS, MD (UNCW) — Senior Christi Laite tallied a match-high 15 kills to lead UNCW to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19) victory over Navy in collegiate volleyball action Friday in the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at the Wesley H. Brown Fieldhouse. It was the season opener for both programs.

Both teams return to action Saturday in the final day of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. UNCW will face Elon (1 p.m.) and UIC (4 p.m.) while Navy will square off against the Flames (11 a.m.) first before closing out the tournament against the Phoenix (6 p.m.)

“Navy was a great first opponent because they forced us to make a lot of in-game adjustments during the very first set,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “Once we settled down and minimized our errors we played very well. I was most pleased with our blocking and defense and we had some high percentage hitting from seniors Christi (Laite) and Courtney (Porter). Our returning players played with composure in every situation, which is exciting to see at this point in the season.”
Laite powered a Seahawks attack that combined to hit .210 for the match, including a .270 clip over the final three frames, and finished with 49 kills. Junior Morgan Kilne joined Laite in double figures with 11 spikes while senior Courtney Porter chipped in nine kills and committed just one error in 17 total attempts for a .471 attack clip.

Sophomore Victoria Phillips dished out 40 assists and added 11 digs while Kiline pitched 15 digs to go along with her 11 kills as both players finished with double-doubles. Sophomore Meredith Peacock recorded seven total blocks and Porter added six, including three solo blocks, as the Seahawks teamed up to record 16 total blocks on the evening.

Junior Alex Cassel notched 11 kills for the Midshipmen, who were held to a .105 hitting percentage for the contest. Freshman Alli Graf tallied a match-high 18 digs while senior Erin Fortner chipped in 14 bumps to go along with her nine kills. Sophomore Alex Karika finished the evening with 37 assists.

After dropping the opening frame, 25-23, the Seahawks took advantage of a 10-3 spurt late in the second set to break a 15-all deadlock and record a 25-18 victory.
UNCW carried the momentum into the third frame as it raced out to an early 6-2 edge before using a 7-1 run later in the frame to cruise to a 25-17 triumph.

The Seahawks never trailed in the fourth set, once again building a quick 6-2 cushion and taking advantage of a 10-6 stretch midway through the stanza to take a 19-11 lead. Navy would respond by tallying seven of the next 11 points to trim the Seahawks advantage to 23-18, but a pair of kills by junior Leah Gagliardi would propel UNCW to a 25-18 victory and the match.

The Seahawks posted a .353 hitting percentage in the decisive frame, led by Laite, who recorded seven without an error in 11 total attempts.

GREENVILLE, NC (UNCW ) — Western Carolina used goals by junior Sara Robinson and sophomore Markie Studinsky in the opening 24 minutes to defeat UNCW, 2-1, in collegiate women’s soccer action Friday in the ECU Soccer Tournament at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

The Catamounts remained undefeated on the season as they improved to 3-0 while the Seahawks slipped to 0-3 on the campaign. Both teams return to action Sunday in the ECU Soccer Tournament as UNCW faces UNCG at Noon while WCU faces host East Carolina at 2:30 p.m.

“We have to stop giving up early goals,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “Give credit to Western Carolina for taking their chances. We fought back well and created some opportunities in the second half. We simply have to get tougher and bounce back for Sunday.”

Robinson opened the scoring just 4:05 into the contest, putting a cross from sophomore Amanda Schwartz into the lower right corner of the net for her second goal of the campaign.

Studinsky doubled the Catamounts advantage to 2-0 in the 24th minute when she knocked a ball past a charging Carolyn Huddy from 16 yards out for her first strike of the season.

Sophomore Katrina Guillou would get the Seahawks on the board just before the end of the half as she took a pass from fellow sophomore Theresa O’Sullivan and put the shot into the left-hand side of the net at the 41:25 mark to make it a 2-1 contest.

That would be as close as the Seahawks would get, as despite out-shooting the Catamounts, 4-1, in the second half, they would be unable to tally the equalizer.
UNCW held a 12-4 shot advantage in the contest, including an 8-3 margin in the first half and attempted seven of the nine corner kicks awarded.

Junior Jenny Lauer and freshman Carly Tintsman split time in net for the Catamounts as Lauer played the first 45 minutes before being replaced by Tintsman at the half. The duo combined to make three stops. Huddy got the start in goal for the Seahawks and finished with two saves.

MIAMI GARDENS, FL (AP) – Duke Johnson had a career-high 186 rushing yards and a touchdown, Stephen Morris threw for 160 yards and another score, and Miami beat Florida Atlantic 34-6 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Receiver Herb Waters had a 63-yard touchdown run on an end-around and Dallas Crawford added a touchdown run for Miami, which plays host to No. 10 Florida next weekend.

Johnson left in the third quarter after getting shaken up on the play where Waters scored and was checked out on the Miami sideline, though did not seem to need any treatment. His was the highest rushing total by any Miami player since Tyrone Moss ran for 195 against North Carolina on Oct. 29, 2005.

Mitch Anderson kicked two field goals for FAU, which is now 4-24 in its last 28 games.
