WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– The UNCW men’s tennis team made its fall debut Friday at the UNCW Invitational and carved out an 11-5 record against players from seven schools competing in the three-day event at Empie Park.
Competing at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center, the Seahawks went 8-4 in singles matches and 3-1 in doubles play on the opening day.
UNCW juniors Rafael Aita and Zach Hublitz and sophomore Santtu Leskinen reached the semifinals in their respective draws to highlight the day.
Aita, a Lima, Peru, native ranked 33rd in today’s inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll of the season, trimmed N.C. Central’s Stephan Charles-Donatien, 6-4, 6-3, in his first match of the day in the A singles flight and then knocked off VCU’s Michal Voscek, 6-2, 7-5, in the quarterfinals. He faces VCU’s Alejandro Argente in the semifinals Saturday at 2 p.m.
Hublitz, the top seed in B singles, drew a first-round bye and beat East Carolina’s Frederic Lehfeldt, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals; He will battle New Mexico’s Andy Van Der Vyver in the semis tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
Leskinen, meanwhile, moved on with a pair of easy wins in the C singles draw. He breezed past N.C. Central’s Will East, 6-4, 6-3, in his first match and reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over East Carolina’s Ross Nigro. Leskinen will play ECU’s Blake Gregory in the semifinals Saturday at 2:30 pm.
A full slate of matches is scheduled for Saturday, beginning with the resumption of doubles action at 9:30 a.m., with singles to follow.
The second day of the bracketed tournament gets under way early Saturday at Empie Park. Admission is free.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Josh Carter scored twice to rally Presbyterian to a 2-1 win over 24th-ranked UNCW on Friday in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Hose improved to 2-0 on the season with their second one-goal win of the young season. The Seahawks, who had just moved into the national rankings for the first time since 2010, dropped to 2-1 in their home debut.
Carter doubled his season total to four goals with his second two-goal outing this season. He knotted the game at 1-all in the 21st minute when he beat UNCW goal keeper Sean Melvin on a free kick from 27 yards out.
On the game-winner, Carter received a short pass into the middle, but then cut the ball back to his right foot and took a touch before firing a shot into the lower right corner of the goal in the 78th minute.
David Sizemore opened the scoring in just the fourth minute when he scored off a volley from the top left of the penalty area following a failed clear by a Blue Hose defender.
The Seahawks held a commanding 18-6 in shots, but keeper Tyler Beadle was up to the task with five saves. Melvin finished with two saves for the Seahawks.
In the tournament opener, Elon improved to 2-0-1 with a double overtime victory over Mercer. Charles Howard scored the game-winner on a deflected shot with 47 seconds remaining.
The Seahawks return to action on Sunday when they host Mercer at 3:30 p.m. Elon and Presbyterian, meanwhile, play at 1 p.m.

GREENVILLE, NC (UNCW) -– UNCW scored twice in a 2:54 span to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat East Carolina, 3-2, in collegiate women’s soccer action Friday at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks picked up their first win of the season as they moved to 1-4 on the campaign. The Pirates, meanwhile, slipped to 2-2-1.
“This was a typical ECU-UNCW game,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “We always know it’s going to be close. I do believe that over the past 10 years we have had eight one-goal games.”
UNCW took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as sophomore Maddie McCormick put home a rebound opportunity in the 39th minute for her first goal of the season.
Freshman forward Lana Spitler leveled the score at 1-all at the 52:23 mark, taking a pass from fellow freshman Autumn Berry before racing behind the Seahawks defense and beating freshman keeper Liisa Rahkola with a shot into the right-hand corner of the net.
The Pirates would gain the lead just 4:01 after Spitler’s tally as freshman Jenna Geist knocked home a rebound for her first collegiate tally.
Senior Nicole Costa started the Seahawks on the comeback trial in the 63rd minute, putting home a feed from sophomore Katrina Guillou to knot the score at 2-2.
Junior Stephanie Bronson netted the game-winner at the 64:54 mark when she collected a loose ball inside the box and put a shot into the left-hand side of the net for her first goal of the season.
UNCW enjoyed a 16-9 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 9-3 edge in the second half. The Seahawks were also awarded nine of the 11 corner kicks taken in the contest.
“After going up 1-0, I felt ECU did a great job putting us under pressure,” said Cairney. “To go behind and storm back with two quick goals is a testament to our young team getting better. We battled very hard tonight and we will get ready for a very talented NC state squad on Sunday. “
Both teams return to action Sunday. UNCW travels to Raleigh to face NC State in a 1 p.m. contest while ECU entertains George Washington in a 2 p.m. start.

NEW YORK (AP) – Serena Williams moved a win away from her second straight U.S. Open title Friday, rolling through Li Na 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals.
On Sunday, Williams will play second-seeded Victoria Azarenka in a rematch of last year’s final.
Williams won the first seven games against Li to extend her streak to 24 straight games without a loss.
Finally, fifth-seeded Li broke through, then actually went up a break for a 2-1 lead in the second set. But Williams won five of the next six games to close out the match.
In search of her 17th major title, Williams has lost a total of 16 games at Flushing Meadows this year.
She’ll be playing in her 21st Grand Slam final.

NEW YORK (AP) – Victoria Azarenka advanced to her second straight U.S. Open final Friday, beating Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 6-2 in a nervous, mistake-filled semifinal.
The players combined to hold serve in only five of 18 games.
The second-seeded Azarenka, the Australian Open champion in 2012 and 2013, improved to a tour-best 31-1 on hard courts this year. She is trying to become the first person to win the Australian and U.S. Opens in the same year since Martina Hingis in 1997.
Azarenka will play the winner of the later semifinal between Serena Williams and Li Na. A Williams-Azarenka final would be a rematch of last year’s title match, which Williams won in three sets.
Azarenka hit 15 winners and committed 25 unforced errors while holding her serve only four of nine times.

MIAMI, FL (UNCW) — Senior Christi Laite tallied 15 kills and junior Morgan Kline chipped in 11 to lead UNCW to a 3-1 (15-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-23) victory over Houston Baptist in collegiate volleyball action Friday in the FIU Classic at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
The Seahawks remained undefeated on the season as they improved to 4-0 while the Huskies slipped to 4-3. UNCW returns to action in the FIU Classic Saturday as it faces Alabama (Noon) and host FIU (6 p.m.) to close out its tournament appearance.
“I have to give our team a lot of credit for their bounce-back mentality after dropping the first set and then also holding their composure in the fourth set when the score was tight,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “We saw action from a lot of players but Christi and Morgan were consistent with finding ways to get kills and our defense was relentless.”
Laite and Kline combined to record 26 of the Seahawks’ 48 kills for the match as they were the only two UNCW players to record double-digit kills. Sophomore Meredith Peacock chipped in eight spikes and added a career-high 11 total blocks while senior Haley Collins tallied a match-best 20 digs to move into sole possession of third place on the program’s career digs chart (1,230). Sophomore Victoria Phillips dished out 30 assists and added nine digs to finish just shy of recording her second double-double of the season.
Freshman Jessica Wooten notched 16 kills and senior Caiti Wenger added 10 for HBU. Kayla Armer handed out a match-best 39 assists while Haley Hoffman tallied 13 digs and bEth Shecterle
After falling in the first set, 25-15, the Seahawks rallied for a 25-16 triumph in the second set, racing out to an early 5-1 advantage before using a 17-7 run later in the frame to pull away from the Huskies.
UNCW carried its momentum into the third set, using a 15-6 spurt midway through the frame to break a 5-all deadlock and cruise to a 25-15 triumph.
In a back-and-forth fourth set that featured a total of 10 ties and seven lead changes, the Seahawks trailed 23-22 when a kill and solo block by Peacock and a Huskies attack error gave UNCW a 25-23 decision and the match.
