YWCA Lower Cape Fear hosts Conversation for Peace at MLK Community Center
WILMINGTON (WWAY) — A non-profit in Wilmington having conversations with the community on how to make peaceful change.
At the Martin Luther King Community Center, the YWCA Lower Cape Fear hosted its annual Conversation for Peace event. The Martin Luther King inspired event brings a diverse group of people together to help make peaceful change in the community, as well as honor the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. This years event was titled “Where Do We Go From Here?” and discussed topics such as women’s rights and health care, voting rights and education. According to YWCA Lower Cape Fear CEO Velva Jenkins, having these conversations with as many people as possible is important.
“When you see a group of people together of all races, age, religion, and they can have these difficult conversations in a peaceful way; it means that people are on the same level of trying to bring about justice and equity in our community,” said Jenkins.
Dozens of people attended the event and all gathered together in groups to discuss these issues and how they would improve them.
