Friday marked the first day high school football teams are permitted to hit the practice field for the upcoming season. Most squads waited for the sun to come up, but that was not the case at Laney. The Buccaneers waited for the clock to strike midnight. Our report from Buctown includes standout Tariq Lane. The senior has decided to attend Laney after contemplating a move to Charlotte. North Brunswick High School has been added to the BB&T Jamboree lineup next month at Legion Stadium. This means all three high schools in Brunswick County will be included along with the four high schools from New Hanover County, Whiteville, South Columbus and Wallace-Rose Hill in the high school football showcase. We have an update on the health of Hoggard head football coach Scott Braswell. Surgery to remove a tumor in his lower back is still in the works for the veteran coach before the start of the upcoming season. Full story...

Hoggard High School head football coach and athletics director Scott Braswell will be taking a leave of absence in order to have surgery on a tumor in his lower back. Braswell is entering his 18th season as the head football coach of the Vikings. Full story...

It didn't take long for East Columbus High to name a new head football coach. Rocky Lewis, son of legendary Clinton head coach Bob Lewis, will take over the Gators. Pending school board approval West Brunswick has a new head baseball and football coach. Bob Hanna was up for board approval on Tuesday night in order to be the new West Brunswick football head coach. Hanna has been the head football coach at Irmo High School in Columbia, South Carolina the last 20 years. Pending school board approval the new head baseball coach at West Brunswick High is T.J. Spivey. He's been the head baseball coach at South Columbus the last two years. Full story...

As mentioned last week on WWAY Laney football & basketball standout Tariq Lane will not be returning to Buctown when school starts back. Lane has decided to move to Charlotte. Lane will also re-classify, which will add another year of high school eligibility to one of the most electrifying athletes in Wilmington.
