The regular season for high school football is over. The first round of the state playoffs will be contested on Friday. New Hanover versus Hoggard tops the schedule, but that matchup is just the tip of the iceberg.

New Hanover High School snapped a long losing streak against Hoggard last Friday on the gridiron. The streak dated back to the mid 1990's. In a strange twist of fate these two football teams have been paired against each other in the first round of the state playoffs.

A first round state playoff matchup of Hoggard versus New Hanover highlights the schedule for the first round of the high school football state playoffs. New Hanover beat Hoggard 13-7 on Friday. The two Wilmington teams get to do it all over again. The winner will advance to round two while the losing team's season will be over.

The 2011 regular season for high school football will conclude on Friday night. For some teams this will be the final game of the year, but most of our local squads will be advancing to the state playoffs. Check out our preview for week number eleven.

There is no bigger football rivalry in our area than Hoggard vs. New Hanover. Both teams will enter Friday night's regular season finale with 7-2 records.
