video If you have ever seen Whiteville’s Shaun Kirk play basketball it is obvious that every team on the state would want to have him. Thanks to an NCHSAA loophole Kirk has been able to suit up for two different teams this season.

State basketball playoffs: WWAY's Monday night sports - Feb. 24

videoThe New Hanover boys basketball team got off to a slow start on Monday in the first round of the state playoffs, but the Wildcats ended up sending Ashley packing. We had highlights from nine different games on Monday! We had video from Shallotte, Jacksonville, Wilmington, Lake Waccamaw, Whiteville and Rocky Point. This includes three of the best slam dunks of the season. Plus more!

videoOn Tuesday Laney, West Brunswick and Trask all participated in the state wrestling duals. We had highlights from Buctown. We also featured high school hoops as well. This included Ashley's sweep of Hoggard, Whiteville's win over West Columbus in boys basketball and West Bladen's victory over Pender. In football news Ashley head coach Tom Eanes has been named an assistant coach for the Shrine Bowl in December. Plus more!

Seahawks continue slide + more Saturday sports

Duke & North Carolina both appear to be back on track in men's basketball, but that's not the case for Buzz Peterson's UNCW squad. The Seahawks squandered a 13 point halftime lead on Saturday. The losing skid for UNCW is now nine losses in a row. A handful of local high school squads played games on Saturday afternoon. Plus the season is now underway for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs!

videoWhiteville High swept South Columbus on Monday in high school hoops. We had highlights from both games on WWAY. Brett Blizzard continues to scorch the nets in Italy. Blizzard pumped in 18 in his team's victory over the weekend. UNCW continues to slide in the national RPI rankings in basketball for both men and women. Plus more!

videoFormer Tar basketball standout Buzz Peterson will take his UNCW basketball squad to Chapel Hill on New Year's Eve to face North Carolina’s Tar Heels in a reunion game for the fourth year Seahawk head coach. Peterson played four seasons for the Tar Heels from 1981-85. Whiteville remains undefeated in high school boys basketball. The Wolfpack captured the Woodmen of the World tourney on Monday night in Bladen County. Plus more!

videoHoggard was unable to hold onto the lead in the third round of the high school football state playoffs on Friday. James Kenan knocked Whiteville out of the playoffs. The Tigers will play Wallace-Rose Hill next. Both UNCW basketball teams lost on Friday. The Seahawk men lost at home. The Seahawk women lost in Cancun against former UNCW coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke and the USC Trojans.
