This Day in NC History: Stede Bonnet, the ‘Gentleman Pirate,’ hanged in South Carolina

On December 10, 1718, Stede Bonnet, the “Gentleman Pirate,” was hanged in South Carolina. An unlikely buccaneer, Bonnet was born in 1688 in Barbados, orphaned at a young age and inherited a sizable plantation. By 1715, Bonnet was married and held the rank of major in the militia. In 1717, he gave up his life among the Barbadian planter elite, deserting his family to become a pirate.

WWAY’s Sunday night sports – Dec. 9

videoOn our 6pm sports on Sunday we checked out the “Holiday Hoopla” at Legion Stadium. The Wilmington Hammerheads pro soccer squad held a tryout, a free youth clinic and a sale on team merchandise. On Sunday the Carolina Panthers more than held their own against the team with the best record in the NFC. We also provided a recap of Saturday’s ACC-CAA showdown between UNCW & Georgia Tech.

Christmas comes early in Leland

videoLeland hosted its 20th Annual Christmas Parade and Festival this weekend. People lined Village Road Northeast from Bojangles to the First Baptist Church to catch the Christmas spirit. Leland police and members of the ROTC program lead the parade, while fire fighters and important members of office including Mayor Brenda Bozeman followed. Winners of the Miss North Carolina Christmas Festival Scholarship Pageant also made appearances at the parade.

Leland teen is missing

videoJanna Sue-Ann White, age 14, is missing after leaving her residence on Blue Banks Loop Rd in Leland, NC around 9:30 Friday night, December 7th. Janna was believed to be going to Wilmington. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a grey and white striped shirt, a zip-up jacket, and black Vans shoes.
