911 calls from suspect describe Hampstead murder scene

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Pender County deputies have charged a man with first degree murder in connection with an early-morning shooting.

Investigators say it happened in the 400 block of Moore’s Landing Road just after 6 a.m. They say Dennis Robert Westberg, 37, shot a man who was in his home.

“He came at me. That’s when I shot him,” Westberg told a 911 dispatcher.

Westberg is currently in jail under no bond. He’s due in court Monday.

The victim has been identified as Larry Joshua Goodson, 34, also of Hampstead. Investigators said the crime was not a random act.

“We are not looking for anybody else at this point in the investigation, so we want the neighbors and the neighborhood to feel secure that there is not somebody else running around,” Capt. Jim Hock said.
