9th annual Surf Dog Experience draws plenty of four-legged competitors in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH (WWAY) — With summer approaching, many are beginning to hit the beach to catch some waves. That also includes our four-legged furry friends
In Carolina Beach on Saturday, a few owners brought their dogs out for a chance to participate in the 9th annual Surf Dog Experience. With the help of some instructors, dogs were able to get on a surf board and ride some waves. Hundreds of people packed the beach, with many cheering on their favorite “surfers” as they took on the competition.
Lucy Gilbert was one of the Surf Dog Experience instructors in the competition and explained just how you can teach a dog to surf.
“Most of these dogs have never surfed before, but they’re pretty comfortable on the water. So, usually take them out, we have a team, usually try to do three or four people per dog on a board so they’ll catch them. Take the dog out, make sure they have their life jackets on and everything. Push them on the waves and someone catches them,” Gilbert said.
The winner of the competition was Ziva, who is now a two time winner of the event and was also last years winner.
