Doctor gives tips on staying safe in the summer heat
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With summer right around the corner and soaring temperatures across the region, it’s important to stay safe in the summer heat.
WWAY sat down with a local doctor to get some tips on staying cool.
Dr. James Thurby with Novant Health recommends planning your outdoor activities in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat.
He says if you have to be outside, be sure to drink plenty of water, and wear long, lightweight clothing.
You should also use an SPF moisturizer daily anytime you plan to be outside for more than 15 minutes, and avoid tanning oils or baby oils that can make sun exposure worse.
Thurby says seniors should take extra precautions.
“Anytime the birthdays stack up, we’re more prone to the adverse affects of anything really,” he explained. “Dehydration especially for folks on blood pressure medicines can come up. Doing things like electrolyte drinks, eating plenty of fruits are good ways to maintain the electrolytes, maintain hydration.”
Thurby adds lightheadedness, fatigue, and redness in the face can all be signs of heat fatigue. If you experience those symptoms, you should get out of the heat as soon as possible.
