Local Spay and Neuter Clinic almost ready to reopen
WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County spay and neuter clinic is nearly ready to reopen after spending 10 months operating outside of its facility.
Fix A Friend, located off Ocean Highway in Winnabow, flooded with three feet of water last September during unnamed Potential-Tropical Cyclone Eight.
Since then, the nonprofit has raised the building six to seven feet above ground level. The structure now includes a basement designed to improve drainage and help prepare for future storms.
Jill Jones, a board member with Adopt an Angel, the nonprofit that owns Fix A Friend, said the clinic serves a vital role in the region.
“This is the largest spay and neuter clinic in southeastern North Carolina,” Jones said. “Because the shelters right now are overwhelmed with homeless animals and truly the only way to stop that is to prevent them from reproducing so this is huge and a huge asset for the county and we want to get back to business and put this all behind us…”
Once reopened, the clinic will be able to treat dogs over 75 pounds. Jones said they have not been able to do that while working out of mobile units.
She also said the facility is not necessarily larger, just raised with a better layout.
Construction is expected to be complete within one to two weeks. The clinic is now waiting on a certificate of occupancy from the county and final approval from the state veterinary board.
