Fort Fisher aquarium hosts Star Wars-themed beach cleanup May 4

FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — Stormtroopers, princesses and droids are invited to dust off their costumes for a unique beach cleanup event at Fort Fisher.
The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is hosting its third annual “May the 4th” Beach Cleanup on Monday, May 4, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.
The themed event encourages participants to dress in costume while helping remove litter from the shoreline.
“Wearing costumes for a beach cleanup has really been fun for the community and our team,” said Joanna Zazzali, director of the aquarium. “It is a great way to inspire folks to join in our shared responsibility to protect the ocean.”
Volunteers can participate in a costume contest, with the winner receiving a “green” prize. Aquarium staff will provide reusable pickers, cotton bags and gloves, along with water refill stations.
Organizers say the event is designed to be free of single-use plastics. Participants are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, repurpose costumes and consider ways to reduce plastic use in their daily lives.
Free parking will be available onsite for volunteers.
The aquarium is encouraging participants to sign up for the cleanup by taking the Green Pledge. The event is part of a series of conservation-focused celebrations marking the aquarium’s 50th anniversary.
