NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A swimmer was rescued this afternoon at the north end of North Topsail Beach after being pulled off a sandbar and caught in a strong current, prompting a multi-agency response involving beach patrol, fire rescue teams, and emergency medical services.

Authorities say the woman, described as a 30-year-old Caucasian, was walking on a sandbar near the North Topsail side when she stepped off into deeper water and was quickly swept into a powerful current toward the Onslow County/Camp Lejeune side of the inlet.

Officials with North Topsail Beach Fire said the woman was alone at the time of the incident. A bystander reportedly witnessed her struggle in the water and immediately called 911.

Multi-Agency Water Rescue Response

Rescue crews searched the area for approximately 15 minutes before locating the woman in distress. Responding agencies included North Topsail Beach Fire and Police, Camp Lejeune Fire and Rescue, Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Onslow County EMS, and the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

Volunteer fire officials said jet skis were used to reach the swimmer in difficult tidal conditions. Crews were able to bring her safely back to the North Topsail side of the inlet.

Witnesses at the scene described the woman as visibly shaken and upset following the rescue. Authorities say she refused medical treatment and declined transport to a hospital.

Area Known for Dangerous Conditions

Officials are again warning the public about hazardous conditions in the area, particularly around the North Topsail inlet and sandbar region, which is known for rapidly shifting currents and deep drop-offs.

Emergency responders described the location as “treacherous,” noting that warning signs are posted in the area advising swimmers of strong currents and unsafe conditions.

The incident comes just weeks after a drowning was reported nearby, underscoring ongoing safety concerns along this stretch of coastline.

On June 1, 2026, 24-year-old Marquest Andre Page Jr. drowned at North Topsail Beach near Access No. 3 after entering strong rip currents while attempting to rescue a child. His body was recovered several days later near Sneads Ferry after an extensive search operation.

Following that tragedy, local officials renewed public safety warnings, stressing that the New River Inlet area is not designed for swimming and is prone to dangerous, fast-moving currents.

Ongoing Situation

Authorities continue to urge beachgoers to exercise extreme caution when entering the water, especially near inlets and sandbars where conditions can change rapidly.

This remains a developing story, and further updates may be released as officials provide more details.
