A closer look at voting taking place in Brunswick County
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — It’s Super Tuesday and we’re heading to Brunswick County to check on voter turnout.
WWAY was at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. Dozens of folks lined up outside of the center, ready to exercise their right to vote. Many had one race in particular on their mind.
“I think we’re in time for some needed change and we want to be a part of that, be a part of seeing things change,” Brunswick County Resident, James Welsh, said. “One of the biggest issues right now is what’s happening in the Department of Education.”
Diving into who’s battling to be on the November ballot in Brunswick County School Board District 01. Incumbent Ed Lemon is not running for re-election. Newcomers Lavar Marlow and Vickie Smith are competing for their seat.
In District 02, Rick Hessman, Catherine Cooke, and David M. Robinson—who died last week—are on the ballot.
In District 04, longtime school board member, Shirley Babson, who lost re-election bids in 2016 and 2020, is running—along with Steven Barger who is a current chairman.
Brunswick County resident and voter, Elizabeth Welsh, shared why she was present at the polls this Super Tuesday.
“Just because it’s my duty,” Welsh said.
Turning to those competing for a chance to be a county commissioner.
In District 03, Jwantana Gardner Frink and pat Sykes are on the ballot.
In District 05, newcomer Erik Tammaru is up against long time commissioner since 2012, Frank Williams.
