A look into one Brunswick County race and polling station

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — We have reaction from one Brunswick County School Board Chairman.

After tonight’s results, he’ll have the chance in November to save his seat once more.

Steven Barger advanced over Shirley Babson, who was a longtime school board member, but lost re-election bids in 2016 and 2020.

“Just very grateful for the support from the voters of Brunswick County. I’m excited to move into November,” Barger said. “Like I’ve been telling everybody tonight, who worked the polls for me and supported me, that we’ve punched our ticket and we’re going to the big dance in November.”

WWAY also took a look at one polling station to see voter turnout.

Brunswick County resident, Randi Gonen, said she is disappointed with the amount of time that it took to cast her vote at Brunswick Forest Fitness and Wellness Center. She said her husband even went home after waiting for more than an hour.

“He’s not coming back because the line is just too long for him. He is totally discouraged,” Gonen said.

Gonen said she hopes this will not be the case for November’s election. If so, she fears it’ll discourage others from being present at the polls in the future.
