AAA: 103M Americans to travel for holidays, what you need to know
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — AAA says 1.5 million more people will be traveling for the holidays compared to last year.
More than 103 million Americans, the most on record, are expected to travel, according to AAA.
From the gas pumps, to the airports, the lines are already starting to form. Wilmington AAA Branch Manager Sarah Hall said more people will drive for the holidays this year.
“Our economy is booming, people, the stock market is up, the new election,” Hall said. “For us, we’ve been very busy, so I think people are very comfortable.”
That also means travelers like Jane Kepler can expect delays.
“I’m concerned mostly once I get right outside D.C.,” Kepler said. “It’s going to be kind of backed up probably.”
Kepler said she has also noticed a difference in gas prices.
“Yeah. I feel like they went up a lot in the last couple of weeks,” Kepler said.
AAA said gas prices are up about 20 cents from this time last year, but that could change in the next few days. They said these prices are still considered some of the cheapest in a decade. Before you get on the road, Hall said make sure you are prepared.
“Check on your car, your travel tips, make sure your tires have the right pressure, oil changes before you go, that sort of thing, pack snacks for the children,” Hall said.
She said there is one thing you need to remember.
“Be very patient,” Hall said. “The joys and some of the challenges of traveling is just being patient. The most thing that you can ask for is that you get there safely.”
So whether you are hitting the road solo, packing up little ones, or four-legged ones, make sure you also pack your patience.
