HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — More than 200 people attended a Memorial Day ceremony at the Hampstead Annex Auditorium Annex on Saturday, May 24, to honor the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in military service.
American Legion Post 167 hosted the event.
A number of community groups participated in the ceremony including the Rocky Point Elementary School Orchestra & Choir and local Boy Scouts Troops.
“On this solemn occasion, we came together in remembrance of the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation,” said Brad Fisher, Commander of American Legion Post 167. “Their bravery and dedication have granted us the freedoms we cherish today.”
There was also a tribute to POW/MIA fallen comrades with several members of Post 167 taking part.
“May their sacrifice never be forgotten, and may we forever stand united in gratitude and reverence,” Fisher said.
Guest speakers included WWAY Evening Anchor Jeff Rivenbark and Captain Joseph Soloman.
Following their speeches, there was a dedication of more than a dozen wreaths presented by local businesses and organizations.
The ceremony concluded with the Color Guard leading attendees outside with a rifle volley salute by the CGROTC Topsail High School and the playing of Taps.
