Ashley girls soccer falls in state championship game 2-1 against Marvin Ridge

MATTHEWS, NC (WWAY) — The Ashley Screaming Eagles girls soccer team came up short in the state championship on Friday against Marvin Ridge 2-1.
The game was mostly controlled by Ashley’s offense in the first half, but a late goal by Marvin Ridge would put them up 1-0 to go into halftime.
However, early in the 2nd half, a corner kick led to a goal by Savannah Manset to tie the game up 1-1 for Ashley. Later in the half, the Mavericks would convert another goal after a penalty to put them ahead 2-1. Marvin Ridge would then hold possession for much of the remaining time as they would win 2-1.
Ashley head coach Erik Graf said despite losing in the state championship for the second straight year, he is still proud of his team.
“A fantastic team, teams really, really close. They really wanted this bad and they did their best and you know, I told them before hand, no matter what happens do your best. We’re so proud of you, love those girls, fantastic kids, hard workers.”
Senior Margaret Roepke said despite coming out on the losing end, it’s been an incredible run.
“Marvin Ridge is a very good team, they deserve it. So, I know we put in everything that we could and I’m very thankful to be able to experience this because I know so many other women, young women want to be here tonight. So, I know its not what we wanted, but I’m very thankful for this opportunity”
