Bald Head Island bonds move forward following referendum vote
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Bald Head Island residents have approved two bond issues to help renourish and upgrade the island’s beaches.
One bond is for $13.5 million for renourishment on the island, and the other is a $4.5 million bond for other improvements.
Both referendums were passed with more than 65% of the vote.
Bald Head Island Public Information Officer Carin Faulkner said the bonds are important to protecting the beach in-between scheduled renourishments from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
”When the Army Corps isn’t giving us sand, we have to come up with a way to nourish our beach, and we have to do that with our own money,” Faulkner explained.
Faulkner noted that this is the third time renourishment bonds were placed on the ballot. Now that the referendums have passed, the village will identify a lender to move forward with the renourishment.
