Brunswick County nonprofit to hold countywide Sleep Out event to raise awareness on homelessness

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — A non-profit in Brunswick County is looking to give people a personal look at a growing issue in the Cape Fear.

Brunswick Partnership for Housing announced a fundraising event designed to get people thinking about this issue of homelessness.A 15-hour-countywide Sleep Out, which will give participants a chance to experience some of what it’s like first-hand. Brunswick Partnership for Housing Sally Learned explained how it will work.

“So, we are starting Sleep Out Brunswick, this is an annual event. It starts out September 25th and will run a month off site so that people anywhere in the county can choose to Sleep Out one night. They can camp out, they can sleep in their cars, they can double up with another family in a house that’s way too small to get a feel for what couch surfing is like.” Learned said.

Participants can choose the place and time where they want to sleep during that month. For those who want to take part with a group, a big one-day event will be held at the Cape Fear Jet Port on October 25th.

“I am looking forward to engaging with people and meeting them in their a-ha moments. Where they learn and experience, and they understand the difficulties that our unsheltered neighbors are facing and our neighbors that are living in poverty,” Leanred said.
