BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Schools hosted a pop-up Prom Closet at South Brunswick High School on Saturday, giving all students in the county the opportunity to obtain formal wear at no cost.

The event also provided students with the option of receiving complimentary alterations for their attire. One local resident, Beth Colinger, generously donated dozens of new dresses, though in total there were around 600 dresses for the students to browse.

Lee Thomas, the school’s music and choir teacher, emphasized that the prom closet can relieve the steep financial burden associated with purchasing or renting prom suits and dresses.

“You know, we’re talking probably $250, maybe even more depending on the dress,” Thomas explained “And then the accessories, so, who knows, it could be $300 maybe $400 when you can come here and get it for free, alterations are free.”

For students eyeing prom attire for the next year, Thomas reassured that this prom closet wasn’t the first, and certainly won’t be the last.
