Celebs wear ribbon designed by NC native to honor Orlando victims at Tony’s

NEW YORK, NY (WWAY) — Celebrities at the Tony Awards are wearing silver ribbons designed by a North Carolina native to honor the victims of a mass shooting in Orlando.

The big night for “Hamilton,” was transformed by a national tragedy: 18 hours before the Tony Awards began, a lone gunman armed with an AR-15-type assault rifle opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., leaving 50 people dead.

The shooting — the deadliest in United States history — added an unwelcome note of sadness, disbelief and anger to Broadway’s big night of celebration.

Performers and presenters arrived for the 8 p.m. broadcast, which was hosted by James Corden, wearing silver ribbons — created by the Tony-winning designer William Ivey Long in the color of the Tony Awards — to express their concern about Orlando.
