Charlotte-area students hold immigration protests

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Dozens of Charlotte-area high school students have walked out of school to protest immigration issues facing the country.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools tells local media outlets that around 100 Garinger High School students left campus Friday morning. That followed a peaceful protest with around 500 students, most of whom then returned to class.

Several other nearby schools were placed on lockdown while the high school students continued their protest.

Schools officials say hundreds of students at several area schools, all of which have significant Latino enrollment, planned to leave their classrooms and speak out about immigration-related issues. Hundreds of students were involved at the five campuses, all of which have significant Hispanic enrollment
