Digging out: How communities are handling the snow

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — While some spent their day making snow angels and snowmen, others got to work and started shoveling.
With a rare snowstorm in the south, North Carolinians got out to enjoy the snow but also put in some work.
Magnolia Greens resident Sharon Beisser enjoyed shoveling the snow.
“I always shovel snow, and I love shoveling snow. My husband keeps coming out and saying that’s enough, come in and I say no, I’m having fun” Beisser exclaimed!
Neighbor Paul Higgins brought his shovel down south from New York.
“This is the first since, I’ve been down here that we’ve had any accumulation,” Higgins said.
Higgins is ready for the snow to melt away.
“Nice to get one snow fall a year, but I’ve had enough now…I’m ready for spring,” Higgins shared.
Another resident, Dan, said the storm left more than he thought.
“More than I expected, but you know it is cold everywhere. It is cold down the gulf coast, so I knew it was coming,” he said.
While shoveling snow is a great workout, it can also be dangerous.
Doctors recommend taking frequent breaks, staying hydrated, and bundling up.
Dan says he made sure to prepare before heading outside to clear the snow.
“Keep my head warm, stay warm, drink some hot tea, take a little B-12 before I come out to give me some energy,” Dan said.
It is also recommended to only put small amounts of snow on the shovel with each pass.
