Dozens show at Rally for Clean Water against GenX

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Safe and clean drinking water is what many residents spoke out about during a rally in downtown Wilmington this afternoon.

They want answers to one important question. GenX, an unknown, causing fear and concern.

That’s why people filled Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington for the clean water rally.

Dr. Kyle Horton spoke about the potential risks. “We have a fundamental and basic human right to clean water,” Dr. Horton said.

The water will now cost a little more because the CFPUA voted Wednesday to raise rates by 2.05 percent.

“I think that it is unconscionable. I don’t think that they should do anything about raising rates when they don’t even know if the water is safe to drink,” concerned resident Bonnie Laserna said.

The one question that everyone wants answered, is the water safe?

“I want to find out the truth about how bad a carcinogen is this particular chemical, how dangerous is it, what is a reasonable level of consumption,” concerned resident Dale Todd said. But until that question is answered Todd is looking into alternatives.

“I drink a lot of water anyways so that is that big of a deal, but I think it’s something that is going to be a big deal if we can’t get some answers here fairly quickly,” Todd said.

Many agreed that CFPUA has not communicated with the public to give them a better understanding of what is happening.

“I read one set of facts and then I read another set of facts, and one says oh it’s really not that bad, and then the other says it could be that bad. I think anybody would want to make sure their family is drinking water that’s safe, ” Todd said.
