FDA investigates multi-state outbreak of listeria linked to soft cheese

(WWAY) — Federal health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Listeria infections linked to a soft cheese product manufactured by Clover Hill Dairy LLC of Mechanicsville, Maryland.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the outbreak involves requeson, a soft cheese similar to ricotta. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working with state and local health agencies, announced the ongoing investigation on June 24.
A total of 12 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been identified in four states. Samples from affected individuals were collected between March 2023 and June 2026.
Among 10 people interviewed by investigators, nine reported eating cheese before becoming ill. Two individuals specifically reported consuming requeson produced by Clover Hill Dairy.
Health officials said 10 people have been hospitalized, and one death has been linked to the outbreak.
The FDA is advising consumers not to eat, sell or serve recalled cheese products associated with the investigation. Additional cheese varieties have also been recalled as part of the ongoing response.
The agency said the investigation remains active and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
