Fit Minute: Join the party with Zumba

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — By now, many people have probably heard of Zumba. It’s a high-energy and super-fun dance workout full of moves with many origins. The mantra in many Zumba classes is just keep moving and have fun.

It sounds like a club and feels like a party. If you ask anybody who takes Zumba at the YMCA in Wilmington they’d say it’s pretty much both.

“This is a great crowd,” said Christi Goodson who’s been taking Zumba for about a year and a half.

“I felt like I was back in my early twenties dancing at the club,” said Wendy Joyner who’s been teaching Zumba for four years.

But, instead of hearing cheesy pickup lines or getting drinks spilled on you, you end up burning up to 1,000 calories in an hour.

“It really doesn’t feel like you’re working out but actually you’re getting an awesome workout,” Goodson said.

“The hour goes by so fast and you’re like, ‘Can I have more?'” Joyner said.

It’s called Zumba. The dance workout combines music, rhythms and moves from Latin, hip hop and ballroom dance. But, participants like Goodson and instructors like Joyner said you don’t need to be a dancer to keep up.

“I just think you need to come and try it out and I really think anybody can do it,” Goodson said.

“It’s OK. I’m here to teach you,” Joyner said.

Joyner teaches by starting slow and then speeding up.

“Start out with the basic steps and then you just gradually add a little bit of flavor to it so that people can know that they can make it their own,” Joyner said.

As participants put their own flavor into each dance, Joyner said they’re getting a lot out of it.

“I’ve seen a lot of weight loss. I’ve also seen a lot of confidence boosters,” Joyner said.

While Goodson doesn’t have the confidence yet to show off what she’s learned outside the exercise room, many other participants have shown off dances they’ve learned at clubs.

“Young girls will come up to me and say I’ve never danced before in my life and now I go to clubs and my friends will be like, ‘Where did you learn that move?’ And, they’ll say, ‘Zumba’,” Joyner said.
