Forecasters predict below average hurricane season

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The official start to the Atlantic Hurricane season is on June 1 and lasts through November. Colorado State University recently released a report forecasting a slightly below average 2017 season.

The CSU Tropical Meteorology Project team is predicting 11 named storms during the upcoming season. Of those, researchers expect four to become hurricanes and two to reach major hurricane strength.

Forecasters says a weak to moderate El Niño could develop by the summer which makes less favorable conditions for hurricanes to form.

Although we may see less tropical systems than last year, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared. As many of us have seen in the past, it only takes one.
