Furman students sue for right to vote in Greenville County
GREENVILLE, SC (AP) — A hearing is scheduled for next month on a lawsuit filed by three Furman University students challenging Greenville County’s voter registration policies.
The Greenville News reports (http://grnol.co/2dauuKz) the hearing is scheduled Oct. 6 on the lawsuit filed last week. The students have asked for a temporary injunction to allow them to register to vote Nov. 8.
Students in other South Carolina counties can list their campus housing as their legal residence on a voter registration form.
But students who attend college in Greenville County must complete an 11-question form that the students say is invasive.
Conway Belangia is the county’s director of voter registrations. He says a 1973 federal court ruling bars officials from allowing college students who list a college campus address from registering to vote in the county.
