Hoggard alum Bryan Sammons speaks on his MLB debut with Detroit Tigers
Sammons threw 96 out of the bullpen Monday
DETROIT, MI (WWAY) – Another Cape Fear baseball product has made the show.
Hoggard alum Bryan Sammons threw for the Detroit Tigers Monday, the same day he was called up to the big leagues. In relief, Sammons threw 7.1 innings and 96 pitches total in a loss to the Cleveland Guardians. Sammons explained how he got the call after just pitching for his minor league team on Sunday.
“So, I drove up that morning. They told me to arrive and just go to the manager’s office , they wanted to talk. So I got there, probably about 12:45PM, they took me into the manager’s office. They just told me you’re going to be active today and you’re probably going to be throwing length today.”
Sammons, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 8th round back in 2017, has continued to play in the minor leagues for years. Despite the loss to the Cleveland Guardians, Sammons said he was proud of his performance.
“But I thought overall I threw really well, just had a few bad pitches that they made me pay for. My mindset going in was pretty much just don’t beat yourself. They’re good hitters, they’re going to make good swings on pitches, just make them earn every run.”
Sammons had a lot of support at the game. His wife was flown out by the Detroit Tigers and his parents drove 12 hours to be there. Back here at home, his former high school coach Tommy Bowker watched live and said he wasn’t surprised considering Sammons work ethic.
“Bryan was a Sophmore in high school and we had noticed big kid, loose arm, had a lot of upside. We told him like look, go run, go long toss, go do all these extra little things, get command of the outer half of the plate. Without question, Bryan did everything we asked of him. We have gave him the map, we gave him the roadwork like here’s what you need to do, and Bryan did it without question.”
